Movie Summary
The main reason Blizzard lost 3 million subs in the past few weeks is
because of Garrisons. The way Blizzard introduced Garrisons defeats the
purpose of a MMORPG. While garrisons are meant to be a minor detail about the expansion, this doesn't negate the fact that Garrisons replace the Main towns. In MoP we had Shrine of Two Moons (horde), in Cataclysm
we had New Orgrimmar, in Wrath of the Lich King we had Dalaran, in Burning Crusade we had Shattrah, in Vanilla we had Orgrimmar.
In Warlods of Draenor we have millions of layers/instances of personal Garrison. These copy/pasta buildings are located in the same spot.
When I started playing WoW in 2004, I couldn't wait to get out of Valley of Trials and Sen'Jin Village simply because of the fact that it was the common starting place of all orcs and trolls. Putting me in the same garrison location with the entire Horde Pool of Players is beyond suffocating. And if I am realizing this reality, it means a lot of other players are too, subconsciously or directly. I quit WoD because of it for 3 months. Now I am back.
Imagine the hundreds of servers replicating hundreds of Iron Forge. It's more tolerating because everyone understands that 10 millions of players couldn't fit in one server. One would sit in Stormwind city and enjoy the presence of hundreds of other
players giving them the feeling of massive multi players experience.
Now, I get the fact that nobody is forced to stay inside their Garrison, but the game kinda suggests one to spend a lot of time in it in order to get better rewards. Once you realize you are alone most of the time in that little town, you get the feeling nobody plays this game anymore.. even though there's 3 other million players in that exact same location, in 3 million other unique parallel Universes.
I'm not an asshole that just wants to deconstruct this aspect of WoD without suggesting a solution. I would like to remind Blizzard of a forgotten prospect of the game that has been forgotten due to the lack of its popularity: Beacons.
Beacons were circles in different places around the World that could get captured (like those in hell fire Peninsula). I suggest Blizzard should incorporate these all over the place around the world for Factions but also for guilds.
This way Horde / Alliance or even guilds could own that which could be the equivalent of a "Garrison". This way, deserted places around the World would be revived. World PvP would br revived in unimaginable ways since guilds would fight for prime locations that would offer more advantages than others.
I understand Blizzard already tried this concept with Beacons in Eastern Plaguelands and even in MoP's patch pre-Timeless Island,
where players would capture Towers, but the concept didn't trigger enough interest from players because it wasn't the real deal. It was a cruel joke.
You can't throw a piece of beacon and expect the hyenas to fight for it. Make the game like Game of Thrones, where every single place in the map is a struggle for survival, PvP wise.
